The present Handbooks have been developed to
help Spanish-speaking struggling readers pass the TAKS. Students who need a review before
taking the test, will also profit from using the manual. The concepts presented are based on
the TEKS and tested on the TAKS.
Teachers and parents alike have long felt the
need to receive more help in preparing their children. However, there is a dearth of practice materials in Spanish,
and most of the materials published are at the students' frustration
level. Therefore,
students have a hard time attaining success when preparing for
the TAKS.
Our handbooks address these challenges. The manuals provide teachers and parents
with Spanish passages at the appropriate level and with clear,
concise instructions about the concepts that the struggling
reader at this level needs to develop to prepare for the TAKS. The topics of the passages and the
vocabulary used have been selected after consulting, teachers,
parents, frequently-used vocabulary lists for this level, as
well as students at the elementary school level.
Both are related to the concrete world of the young student. In order to scaffold learning, the passages start out being short
and become longer as the students acquire the concepts. This is a very important instructional
method when teaching struggling learners.
The manuals areorganized by TAKS objectives,
ranked by their order of importance on the test for the particular
grade level. Each section contains a brief description
of the concept involved and clear instructional suggestions
with examples. The
passages and questions provided for student practice are presented
in the TAKS format. An
answer key is provided at the end of each section.
The last section of the manual presents practice tests. The initial practice tests in this
section are shorter than the rest to avoid frustrating students
before they become familiar with the concepts involved, and
in order to help students develop familiarity and endurance
with the test-taking process.
